The Qwest Foundation announced its support of El Centro de la Raza on Dec. 13 with a $5,000 contribution. The grant will be used toward the purchase of computers for classrooms and to educate families on a broad variety of information and opportunities available from Qwest. This grant in particular is an element of the Spanish-language Motívate.Edúcate.Elévate. program.
Since being founded in 1972, El Centro has risen to become one of the most comprehensive Latino-serving agencies providing one-stop, culturally relevant services. Many programs focus on providing high-quality education to the most vulnerable populations, including children.
Although activities have generally contributed to grade increases, the center has reached a critical time when an upgrade is needed for teaching tools and activities that will further strengthen the development of students.
"Mil gracias to the Qwest Foundation for its generous support," said Roberto Maestas, executive director of El Centro. "With this assistance our children will be provided with up-to-date computers in a world where technology has become a powerful tool for strengthening and building our community."
The new computers will also allow users to easily access www.qwest.com/motivate, the Web site that serves as a focal point for the larger Motívate.Edúcate.Elévate. program. The site contains information for parents and children and focuses primarily on encouraging community involvement and education, promoting online safety and preventing identity theft.
