EDITORIAL | Tup Tim Thai tumbles

Another beloved brick falls.

News that Tup Tim Thai, an Uptown and citywide dining treasure for 24 years, will close its doors May 28 is being greeted with consternation all around.

The reason for the closure? You guessed it: a hike in rents.

Uptown Queen Anne lives downstream from the ongoing development in South Lake Union: We can expect more of this.

That Easy Street Records made way for yet another Chase Bank was a blow to the character of the neighborhood. We don’t know what business might take up residence at 118 Mercer St. Higher rents, though, often mean unique, locally owned businesses are priced out of the market, leaving cookie-cutter outfits with economies of scale to move in.

Concurrently, the Calva Café at 1905 Queen Anne Ave. N., a modest sushi and Chinese food space with a strong following on upper Queen Anne, is set to close May 24 after seven years. Increased rents, of course.

We can hope both restaurants find another Queen Anne location, but that’s a tough order, given the way of things.[[In-content Ad]]
