EDITORIAL | Good deal for grocery workers

The last-minute, tentative contract agreement reached between four supermarket chains (Albertsons, Fred Meyer, QFC and Safeway) and the grocery-store workers unions may be the best deal any shopper would ever get.

Though it has yet to be reviewed and approved by the workers themselves, the tentative agreement “continues to preserve good wages, secure pensions and access to quality, affordable health care for our employees,” according to the negotiators for the supermarket chains.

With talk rampant about raising the minimum wage to $15 per hour in Washington state, this potential strike underscored the workers’ concerns of a proposed wage freeze and cuts to sick leave, health-care benefits and holiday pay. The resulting agreement not only helps the current workers but all others who follow them in the employment line in this mild economic upturn.

It’s good business for companies to buy into their employees’ well-being.
