Dragons, Huskies, Hoffman and a mailbox

Inside View

...Took my daughter to see "How to Train Your Dragon" at Pacific Place last week. Great story, great message and visually stunning in 3-D. But even better was some quality time with my eldest daughter. She's 7 and just like any kid, loves movies. So we went and we both loved the movie. There we were, wearing those 3-D glasses and eating popcorn. I have a feeling I'm going to remember that day for a long time...

...Got a note from some concerned citizens that Discovery Park was closing. Not so, says parks spokesperson Dewey Potter. (See story on page 1). She ssaid she hadn't heard anything remotely like that.

However, she did say parks director Tim Gallagher and his budget staff were working away on how to trim costs in anticipation of the $50-million shortfall proected in the city budget. That projection is to come at the end of April. Once that's announced, city departments must submit to the mayor recommendations on what needs to stay and what might have to go. Considering that, Potter said, nothing is off the table...

...What a bittersweet moment for the Huskies last Thursday when the team fell at the hands of the West Virginia Mountaineers 69-56. But hey, the Sweet 16. That's not bad. Better than the perenial Gonzaga this year anyway. And Mr. Pondexter is sure to be getting minutes soon in the NBA. Congratulations to the Huskies!...

...Come the first week of April, Magnolia's new mailbox will be at the US Bank drive-through at the corner of West McGraw and 32nd Avenue West in the Village. But say goodbye to teh one at 3054 28th Ave. W. The U.S. Post Office is hemorrhaging and is even considering stopping service on Saturdays. Consolidation is the buzz word. Melanie Smith pounded on the powers that be at the USPS for two years until they finally coughed up a box. The one on 28th was rarely used. We'll see if the new one becomes popular or not...

...Bill Hoffman is running against that barnacle Rep. Jim McDermott for the U.S. House of Representatives, the 7th Congressional District in Washington state. McDermott is in his 11th term. Hoffman, a Democrat, is going to take a swing at McDermott in the primaries. If he can somehow conquer the political goliath, the flat-tax proponent might just win in November. But if McDermott gets ousted, which is unlikely, that'll only fuel the chances of a Republican candidate. Just look at Massachusetts...

The first annual Seattle Stories was pretty much as success. I wanted it to be in Magnolia as there a re a lot of talented speakers and writers there, and I'd gotten to know the proprietors of the Serendipity Cafe, Nanette Baker and Jen Young. Jen is also the co-chair of the PTA at Catharine Blaine K-8.

And her brother is married to Nanette. I know. Small world. Anyway, they were gracious enough to house the evnet at their family restaurant and on Saturday night, the place was filled with diners and guesets of the show.

Each storyteller was outstanding, but for me, Dennis Wilken's tale about getting his draft notice was the highlight. Wilken is a natural storyteller. He lives in Queen Anne, but he needs to get to Los Angeles or New York to get these stories of his to market. They're gems...

...I've never participated in high school or college crew. But if I could go back in time, I might give it a go. Looking at the rowers for Seattle Pacific University, on page 1, made me want to get out there and lend a hand, or a paddle anyway.
