Dogs on the catwalk? Pet adoption program is in full swing this weekend

The Hills Pet Nutrition "Second Chance for Love" Tour will be in Seattle this weekend to encourage local residents to help save the lives of one million cats and dogs by the end of the year. Seattle area residents can contribute to the cause by visiting a shelter in their area and adopting a pet.As part of the tour, Hills will cover the adoption fee for the first 25 adoptions that are approved from 12-3 p.m., Saturday, May 17, and will provide these owners with a new pet starter kit during the special event at the Seattle Animal Shelter, 2061 15th Ave. W.In addition, celebrity pet photographer Jim Dratfield will also be on hand to capture pictures of pet owners with their newly adopted cats or dogs. Dratfield was an actor for 14 years and appeared on Broadway and on TV with a recurring role on "St. Elsewhere." His books are "Pug Shots", "Petography", "What My Dog Does", and "Underdog". His next book comes out in 2009 as a follow up to Pug Shots. The free photographs will be available to consumers online following the adoption event.New and current pet owners will have the opportunity to share their own adoption success stories, learn more about proper pet nutrition and have a chance to win $10,000 for a shelter of their choice by visiting www.HillsPet.com/2ndChance. At the Web site, new pet owners are encouraged to submit their own pet adoption stories and photographs as part of the Second Chance contest. Two grand-prize winners will receive a special photo shoot with Jim Dratfield in New York City and their nominated shelters will each receive a $10,000 donation. Contest entries will be accepted through Nov. 4. Each year, 6 million to 8 million cats and dogs enter animal shelters in the United States, according to the Humane Society of United States (HSUS). The primary goal of the event is to raise awareness of that and to promote pet adoptions. The Second Chance for Love program was conceived in 2002 and since then has supported the adoption of more than 2.9 million pets through its more than 1,300 partner shelters. Last year, Hills donated more than $30 million worth of food. The program is the company's largest adoption initiative.
