At a special meeting in February, the Lake Washington School District board of directors voted unanimously to appoint Chip Kimball, Ed.D., as the district's new superintendent as of July 1. Kimball, 43, who is currently deputy superintendent of the district, will succeed Dr. Don Saul, who will step down on June 30.
At the Jan. 8 board meeting, Superintendent Don Saul - who has served in the position since July 1, 2002 - announced his decision to resign.
Dr. Kimball came to the district in 1996 and was promoted to deputy superintendent last spring, in charge of all educational programs. He has served as the district's chief information officer while also supervising the Eastlake region of the district. Dr. Kimball began his career as a high school science teacher in Madera, Calif. He received his doctorate in education in educational leadership from the University of Southern California in 1995.
OPEN ENROLLMENT THROUGH MARCH 23
The Lake Washington School District holds a short open enrollment period once each year for parents who want their children in grades 1-12 to attend a school other than their neighborhood school. To take advantage of open enrollment, parents must apply for a change to that school assignment, also known as an in-district transfer or variance, between March 1 and March 23.
For kindergarten students the request for a variance is made at the time of registration. Kindergarten registration is March 1 from 1-7 p.m. at the schools.
This open enrollment option only applies to those schools that have space available. Schools closed to open enrollment will be posted on the district Web site by March 1.
In-district students who already attend a school other than their neighborhood school need not reapply for next year, unless the student will be going into seventh or 10th grade. These students will be changing schools to go to a junior high or high school. These changes are treated as a new variance request.
An in-district transfer form can be picked up at any school during the open enrollment period. The completed request must be submitted to the student's home school. Acceptance is based on space available in a school, grade or program. In the event that there are more requests than can be accommodated, date of request will determine admission.
Students from outside the district who wish to attend Lake Washington's schools can apply for enrollment at any time by initiating a request with their home school district. However, students within the district have priority for available spaces. Students from outside the district will be placed after the in-district students are accommodated.
Parents from inside the district will be notified of the result of their in-district transfer request this spring. For the outside the district requests, the notification will take place by Aug. 22.

CALENDAR FINALIZED FORMAKING UP SNOW DAYS
Following a parent survey and a teacher union vote, the Lake Washington School District has finalized its new plan to make up five weather-related school closures that occurred in November and January. (A sixth day related to the December windstorm qualifies for a state waiver.)
The district will hold school on two planned teacher training days, March 2 and May 25, and will add three days to the end of the school year. That means school will be in session on June 21, 22 and 25 instead of ending on June 20. June 25 will be a half day of school, as the last day of school traditionally has been.
The March 2 teacher training day will be changed to Feb. 21. Teachers will also work extended days the first four Wednesdays in May to receive the training that would have taken place on May 25.
If there are any more weather closures during this winter, those make-up days will be added to the end of the school year.
