Discovery Park searched for missing student

Search teams combing Discovery Park on Tuesday and Wednesday April 12 and13, found no trace of 18-year-old Marizela Perez, a University of Washington student who disappeared on March 5.

She was last seen between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the University Safeway at 4732 Brooklyn Ave. N.E. She lives with her aunt and uncle in South Seattle and police say they have probable identification of her boarding the light rail train at the Othello stop on her way to the University District.

Her family has hired an organization that specializes in search and rescue operations with dogs. According to police, it is believed that not long before disappearing, she searched local websites for information on the operation hours for Seattle parks.

That led family members to use the dog teams to search various Seattle parks, including Discovery Park.

One dog team appeared to have found something in a wooded and brushy area near the southern entrance to Discovery Park at 43rd Avenue North and West Emerson Street.

However, a search by Seattle police and homicide detectives only uncovered rotting clothes that appeared to have been in the brushy area for an extended period of time.

Family members are continuing to search for Perez, who is the younger cousin of Fox News Commentator Michelle Malkin.

Police say they have no reason to suspect foul play at this stage but media reports say that family members have stated that Perez was taking anti-depressants. It has also been reported that Perez’s ATM card has not been used since shortly before she disappeared.

Perez is an Asian female, 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing approximately 110 pounds. She has a skinny build, an asymmetrical bob with short bangs, with brown and red highlights in her hair. She has a tattoo on her left inner arm with the words “lahat ay magiging maayos” (all will be well).

She was last seen wearing a dark jacket with a hood over a light colored sweater with a hood, denim jeans, light brown suede laced boots, possibly wearing green contact lenses.

She was carrying a denim drawstring backpack, with a rainbow butterfly screenprint on it. She was also carrying a Macbook Pro laptop computer.

If you have any information about Perez’s whereabouts, you are asked to call the Seattle police Department’s Missing Persons Bureau at 206-684-5582.
