David Kanigel

A generous and loving spirit

David Michael Kanigel, who fought valiantly against brain cancer, a battle that inspired all of his friends and family, passed peacefully on June 5. He was 65.
Mr. Kanigel was born March 10, 1945 in Brooklyn, N.Y., but moved with his family to Palm Beach, Fla., at age 11. He went to school in Florida and graduated from the University of Florida law school. After college he spent three years in the Air Force before moving to Colorado where he worked as a prosecuting attorney at the City of Denver and later at his own law practice in Evergreen, Colo.
Mr. Kanigel and his wife, Ginny, moved to Seattle in 1997 where he served as legal council for the WSCCE.
Mr. Kanigel is survived by his devoted wife, Ginny, daughters Kim Kanigel-Winner, Kara Copanas, his three stepdaughters Erin Haley-Wright, Gina Onstott and Shannan Whalen, six grandchildren, sisters Barbara Schwartz and Laura Jackson of New York, and an extended family of loving in-laws and close friends.
Memories of Mr. Kanigel's generous and loving spirit, coupled with his intelligence and humor, will sustain all who knew him.
A celebration of Mr. Kanigel's life will be held at the home of Bill and Deena Baron on Sunday, June 15, at 2465 Fourth Ave. N. (Queen Anne), 206-285-5192. There will be a private family service from 2-3 p.m. followed by an open house and reception from 3:30-5:30 p.m., when guests are welcome to share stories. A memorial gathering will be held in Colorado later this summer. Mr. Kanigel's ashes will be strewn in his favorite bay in Kona, HI.
