Cure your wedding blues in South Seattle

With spring starting and engagement rings that were delivered over the holidays, there will be many future brides and grooms out looking for the perfect spot to have a wedding, buy a dress, get flowers or hire a photographer. This month's article will focus on local businesses in Rainier Valley that might help with your upcoming wedding planning, although most of these vendors could be used for other special events.

LOCATION, LOCATION

When I got married it was important for me to stay in the neighborhood to celebrate our marriage with friends and family in a setting that fit our personalities.

We chose to have an outside ceremony in MOUNT BAKER PARK with a reception to follow at the MOUNT BAKER COMMUNITY CLUB. KUBOTA GARDENS is also a fantastic place to get married but you will need to book it early and it's a little more expensive than some of the other city parks. You can go to www.seattle.gov/parks/reservations/weddings/parksites.htm to check out the possibilities for parks and download the city's wedding planning guide.

PRITCHARD BEACH and THE LAKEWOOD COMMUNITY CLUB have great spaces for smaller weddings. COLUMBIA CITY THEATRE rents out their space for a more modern wedding with a great space for live music.

DRESSED TO THE NINES

If you are looking for a wedding dress, try THUY BRIDAL located at 3821 Rainier Avenue South or MIMI BRIDAL at 5306 Martin Luther King Jr. Way South. If you already have your perfect dress but you just need it altered, I had mine altered at Thuy Bridal and they did a fantastic job. Flower girl dresses can also be difficult to find, but both of these bridal shops have some cute selections. They also have the perfect little tuxedo for the ring-bearers.

FREEZE FRAME

DANI WEISS PHOTOGRAPHY is an option for a local photographer who specializes in weddings and other special events. Weiss' style is whimsical and fun, but she also has a taste for style and class. You can find out more about Weiss' work at www.daniweissphotography.com.

PIECE OF...

Wedding cakes are always a central focus of the party. You can try REMO BORROCHINI BAKERY to satisfy your traditional needs nicely.

For something a little different, you might try GRAND FINALE DESSERTS and Nathan Sawyer, who owns and operates his own home business. His desserts aren't traditional wedding cakes, but he does offer some of the best desserts that I've ever tasted. Sawyer also makes specialty desserts for many of the local restaurants. If you already know where your wedding cake is coming from, you might try him for a rehearsal dinner dessert or bridal shower cake. You just can't go wrong with Grand Finale Desserts: 725-6561.

FLOWER POWER

KC'S FLOWERS, located in Columbia City, is a full wedding service provider. they are open Monday-Saturday and offer a free, one-hour wedding floral consultation. You'll have a chance to look through their wedding floral books and decide what flowers you want and find out what flowers are in season during your ceremony. You must call ahead to schedule the appointment.

Following your consultation, they will give you an estimate so you can plan your budget and make adjustments as needed. It's never too early to start planning and looking around for ideas. Give Kurt Wong a call at 722-2200.
