'YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU'

Thanks also go to their acting coach, Steve Lerian, and to the many parents and friends who put in long hours - John Poulson, Chet Nelson, the Sandona family, the Veldee family, the Nelson family, Tanya Matskewich and Devon Sherrow-Groves.

MOCK TRIAL TEAM
he International Community School's criminal justice class sent a team to the 18th Annual YMCA High School Mock Trial (district level) competition held at the King County Courthouse on Feb. 24. This year's fictional case explored the themes of privacy and reputation and was written by Superior Court Judge William Downing, who also oversaw the event in our county.

This year, a musical mega-star sued a photojournalist for invasion of privacy. This journalist, in turn, brought a counterclaim for defamation against the musician plaintiff. Nineteen teams competed in this role-playing simulation. Each mock trial was judged by a Superior Court judge or commissioner and was scored by juries made up of volunteer lawyers.

ICS vanquished Renton High School, but fell to a team from Seattle's Roosevelt High School. ICS placed eleventh, which was right in the middle of a talented array of teams. While the ICS team did not take part in the state competition being held in Olympia on March 23-25, the students had a great time learning about the challenges of our justice system.

The ICS Mock Trial Team was led by four brave and clever "trial attorneys"- Victoria Falkner, Jason Keffer, Denny Luan and Sang-Hee Min. These trial attorneys were assisted by two additional "motion practice attorneys," who argued either side of a pre-trial motion for an anonymous jury - Sasha Mascarenhas and Tim Strother.

Three ICS students received awards for their success and hard work after the first two rounds: Kate Lewis won an outstanding witness award, and Sang-Hee Min and Jason Keffer won outstanding attorney awards.

The mock trial team is taught by the ICS criminal justice teacher, Ted Over, and coached by two ICS fathers, Philip Shucklin and Judge David Steiner.[[In-content Ad]]
