The controversial five-stone sculptures are in place in Counterbalance Park at the corner of Queen Anne and Roy Street.
The sculptures came about after the Uptown Alliance parks committee decided the installation would be a way to honor Queen Anne businessman Shah Safari, who contributed $225,000 toward the park’s construction, which opened in 2008.
Those who opposed the installation, including family and admirers of landscape architect Robert Murase, felt the sculptures compromised his minimalist vision for what turned out to be his Murase’s final project.
Murase died in 2005.
Compromises were made between the city and Uptown Alliance: The standing stones were reduced in size and situated in the northwest corner of the park; the sitting stones were intalled in the crushed rock area in the middle of the park.
