Counterbalance Park sculpture approved by city

The green light has been given by Seattle Parks and Recreation for the installation of the controversial five-stone sculpture in Counterbalance Park.

The city and Uptown Alliance reached a compromise on the sculpture’s placement: three stones are headed for the crushed-stone area in center of the park; the two bigger stones will stand in the park’s northwest corner.

The Uptown Alliance must pay for the installation and insurance.

The approval comes after meetings between the Uptown Alliance, Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Seattle Parks Foundation. Family and admirers of park designer Robert Murase, who died in 2005, said the sculpture was not in keeping with his vision for the .28-acre space at 2 Roy St.

The Park was dedicated in July 2008.
