Councilmember Sally Clark released the following statement in response to the Mayor's veto of a bill concerning a license for nightclubs:
"It's unfortunate to get to this point after so many months of hard work by the Council and the stakeholders in the nightlife and residential communities. Given how the legislation was amended, it is hard for me to muster enthusiasm for an override.
"I will weigh my options over the next few weeks. In addition, I will bring forward to full council separate legislation already passed by the Economic Development and Neighborhoods Committee establishing a Nightlife Advisory Committee most likely in December after budget deliberations. I am dedicated to creating an advisory committee as a forum for issues on good business practices for nightclubs and healthy neighborhoods. Such an advisory committee will make invaluable recommendations both to the Council and city government in general.
"Regardless of the fate of the license, the Council has already passed a package of legislation that establishes a Nightlife Enforcement Team, requires larger clubs to develop safety plans, and makes the Nuisance Code stronger. In December, the Council will likely take final action on 'smartening' our Noise Ordinance, as well."
