Chihuly exhibit is approved by Seattle City Council

The Seattle City Council unanimously approved a lease agreement that calls for Dale Chihuly to build a glass-art exhibition hall in the area that used to house the Seattle Center’s Fun Forest, near the Space Needle.

The announcement culminates a very slow process to build new facilities that will bring in more money to the cash-strapped Seattle Center.

But Chihuly and his team didn’t get the exclusive rights they were hoping for. The lease agreement allows other artists to also sell their works at the Center, as well.

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, the lease agreement with Chihuly’s Center Art LLC, specifies that the base rent would be $350,000 a year for the exhibit space. The lease will increase to $500,000 in the future. Seattle Center would also get a percentage of the glass exhibit’s net sales after the fifth year of its operation.

Chihuly’s exhibit will be built in the old Fun Forest space. Also sharing the space will be alternative radio station KEXP.
