Chamber makes holiday magic in the park

On Friday evening, Dec. 2, under bright lights and a huge tent, the Greater Queen Anne Chamber of Commerce held its first annual Roasty Toasty holiday event in the new park at Queen Anne Ave. N. and Roy St. - currently called Counterbalance Square as the public process moves forward to permanently name the park. The event was part of the 12th annual Holiday Magic sponsored by Queen Anne merchants.

GQACC spokesperson Margaret Irvine said, "Our committee wasn't sure what to expect as far as attendance, and we were thrilled to have more than 150 neighbors join us throughout the evening." Toast & Jam, a live band from All Saints Church, added musical entertainment along with Ballard High School and McClure Middle School music students.

Among highlights of the evening was a bonfire at which residents and visitors roasted marshmallows and made s'mores. Many folks commented how great it was to have an outside bonfire. Some of the neighborhood children had never experienced roasting treats outside on an open fire.

To cap the evening, those irrepressible party animals Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus paid a visit and mingled with the guests.

In reviewing the event, chairperson Tom Lee of Queen Anne Gardens, said, "We'll elaborate on the bonfire next year. It was warming and bright and brought out the community."

The event was sponsored by local merchants with the help of a Seattle Department of Neighborhoods grant.
