Celebrate Capitol Hill's independence

The second annual Capitol Hill Independence Day Community Picnic takes place on Wednesday, July 4, from noon to 5 p.m. at Cal Anderson Park.

The celebration will include music, food, kids activities and an opportunity to gather in one of the city's best parks.

Musical groups include Amber Tide, a high-spirited eclectic acoustic duo; Naby Camara with Lagni Sussu, a trio playing dynamic rhythms based on West African music styles; and The Jazz Beacons, a versatile group with a repertoire of jazz, R&B, reggae and rock.

Dante's famous Inferno Dogs, snow cones and soda will be available. An inflated jumping toy will be on the premises for the kids.

America's Birthday All-Ages Chess Tourney will take place at the park Shelterhouse. Registration, with $4 fee, is at 12:30 p.m., with the tournament running from 1 to 3 p.m. The park's oversized chess/checkerboard pieces will be available for play on the five outdoor boards.

Everyone is welcome. The gathering is centered in the meadow area north of the Shelterhouse activity building in the center of the park just north of the Bobby Morris Playfield. The picnic is sponsored by the Cal Anderson Park Alliance (CAPA), Seattle Parks & Recreation, Capitol Hill Housing, The Berger Partnership, Capitol Hill Times, Seattle Gay News and The Dwelling Company.

Cal Anderson Park is located at 1635 11th Ave., bordered by 11th Avenue, East Denny Way, Nagle Place and East Pine Street.
