Capitol Hill is a lot safer than many parts of the city, according to crime statistics. The one glaring exception is rape, which was down 9 percent in 2006 from 2005 for the city. Capitol Hill saw a 50 percent jump from 10 rapes to 15 in the same time period.
Robberies were up 2 percent on the Hill, compared with 4 percent for the city, while aggravated assaults in the neighborhood were down 15 percent, compared with a citywide decline of just 1 percent.
Residential burglaries on Capitol Hill dropped 1 percent between 2005 and 2006, compared with a citywide increase of 14 percent in that time. By contrast, non-residential burglaries citywide were up 3 percent, while Capitol Hill saw a 9-percent drop.
Thefts, which include car prowls, saw an 8 percent decline from 2005 to 2006, but the city as a whole did better with a 12-percent drop. Auto thefts were down for both the city and Capitol Hill, with drops 15 percent and 18 percent, respectively.
And arson on Capitol Hill dropped 31 percent from 13 in 2005 to 9 in 2006. By contrast, the city as a whole saw an 8-percent increase to 234 in the same time period.[[In-content Ad]]
