Cancer walk this weekend

The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life will take over Memorial Stadium this weekend to raise cancer awareness.

The event is an 18-hour-long relay in which teams of walkers will continuously walk the stadium track from 2 p.m. this Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday.

Organizers of the event are volunteers, including Marilyn Klepper, who has been calling on businesses and individuals to donate time and in-kind services. Klepper's daughter, Jean-Marie, died from osteo-sarcoma in 2001 at age 16. Klepper's son, Scott, a senior at Ballard High School will walk, as will Klepper herself.

Several students at Ballard High School will participate, including Reed Stevens, who is a cancer survivor.

Several businesses in Queen Anne and Magnolia are donating food and other items. They include Albertsons, Magnolia Thriftway, Magnolia's Bookstore, Maggie Bluff's, Silver Platters, Zeek's Pizza, Jillian's Billiard Club, QFC, Starbucks, Ivar's and Noah's Bagels. Ivar's is giving away 300 pounds of clam chowder.

The general public is invited to attend and to buy light sticks for the evening's luminaria ceremony, where, like last year, hundreds of stick lights are held aloft by guests to spell out the word hope.[[In-content Ad]]
