Bumbershoot ahead

Bumbershoot doesn’t draw the kinds of crowds it used to, but 100,000 plus people headed for the Seattle Center grounds over the Labor Day weekend still create a major impact on lower Queen Anne surface streets and parking lots.

Bumbershoot 2012 runs from Saturday, Sept. 1 to Monday, Sept. 3. In between, a number of artistic disciplines — music, comedy, theater, literary, visual art and film — will share the Center’s 74-acre turf.

This year’s headliners are Jane’s Addiction, Tony Bennett and Skrillex.

Seattle Department of Transportation advises Bumbershooters to use public transportation or go by foot, bike or carpool.

Free bike parking is available on Fifth Avenue and Thomas Street between EMP and the Space Needle. For more information on Seattle Center parking go to: www.seattlecenter.com/transportation/parking/

The festival started out free in 1971 and has attracted numerous, nationally known acts through the years, including Chuck Berry, who entered into Bumbershoot lore by kicking a hired, local bass player off the stage during his set.
