Boy, 12, arrested for carport fire

A 12-year-old boy has been arrested for allegedly setting a fire to a carport in the 2800 block of 22nd Avenue West in Magnolia on June 20. The fire destroyed three cars and was determined to be arson.

According to the Seattle Fire Department (SFD), it received a 911 call at 3:21 p.m. of a fire at a triplex. Fire units arrived to see 200-foot-high column of heavy, black smoke coming from the fully involved fire.

A news report said a neighbor sprayed water with a garden hose toward the triplex to help put out the fire.

Firefighters contained the fire to the carport, a portion of a patio and surrounding fences, though the triplex suffered charring to its brick siding and one window was damaged. The fire was extinguished in 25 minutes.

All residents were evacuated, including a mother napping with her two young children, and no injuries were reported.

Damage was estimated at $30,000.

According to SFD spokesperson Kyle Moore, neighbors provided investigators with information about the boy, who was seen nearby playing with fire. He was subsequently booked in the King County Youth Services Center and was scheduled to appear in juvenile court the following afternoon.[[In-content Ad]]
