Do you have a problem house on your block? Are you concerned about crime in your neighborhood?
On Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to noon, Beacon Hill neighbors will gather at El Centro de la Raza, 2524 16th Ave. S., for a block watch summit.
Karen McCall, acting director of the licensing and regulation division of the Washington state Liquor Control Board will address the gathering about the alcoholic impact area (AIA).
Seattle's Pioneer Square AIA was expanded last winter to "city core" and University District neighborhoods. McCall will answer questions about the AIA and how other Seattle communities can be included.
Representatives from the Seattle City Attorney's Office will also attend and discuss how a community service project for non-violent offenders can benefit the Beacon Hill community. Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) surveys will be introduced by the Seattle Neighborhood Group, and there will be an update from the Department of Neighborhoods on the city's new approach to making greenbelts safe.
Mark Solomon, the crime prevention coordinator for the South Precinct, will help guide a workshop of experienced and new block watchers in methods used to accomplish public safety successes.
The community-based event was made possible through the cooperation of 11th District State Representative Zack Hudgins, several Beacon Hill block watches, and Solomon. Refreshments will be donated by the Hill Top Red Apple Market.
The summit will be held in the downstairs, northeast conference area at El Centro, the Salvador Allende Room. Participants should enter at the north door.
