Bike the Bluff shifts to Indian summer

The 16th annual Bike the Bluff cycling event will be held this year on Saturday, Sept. 8. This popular neighborhood fundraiser gives participants the option to walk or ride a 4-mile or 6.5-mile loop around Magnolia, then enjoy a neighborhood picnic and a dip in "Pop" Mounger Pool.

The open-course ride will begin and end at Mounger Pool parking lot on 32nd Avenue West. Same-day registration begins at 10 a.m., at which time the course is open. The course officially closes at 2 p.m.

Bike the Bluff originated as a fundraiser for the Magnolia Helpline. The Helpline closed its doors in March, but "We wanted to keep Bike the Bluff going," says LoriAnn Thomas, former Magnolia Helpline administrator. The new beneficiary will be Catharine Blaine School.

"Blaine seemed like the perfect fit," Thomas explained. "Because it is connected to the Community Center and is so centrally located, the campus is used by families from all over Magnolia. It's really the hub of our neighborhood's social and recreational core."

Last year's BtB attracted more than 150 participants and raised upwards of $5,000. Funds from this year's ride will be dedicated to landscaping and playground improvements at Blaine.

Registration fees are $12 for persons over 12, $6 for children 12 and younger, or $25 for a family. Admission to the pool between noon and 2:25 that day is included in the BtB registration fee. Sponsorships are available for members of the Magnolia business community who would like to show their support. Volunteers are needed to staff water stations on BtB day.
