Best of the Northwest show offers local artists at Magnuson Park

The spring Best of the Northwest show at Magnuson Park on March 26 and 27 has managed to secure this favorite venue, Hangar 30, for the 2012 spring show, as well.

The Northwest Art Alliance has been using the hangars in Magnuson Park for years to showcase hundreds of regional artists participating in their shows. New city regulations will allow only four events to occur in Hangar 30 next year, so the Alliance entered a lottery and won.

This historic hangar is so well-liked because it’s light-filled and surprises visitors with its atrium-like feel. The 110 artists participating in this event enjoy the vibe as, all weekend long, live music fills the air with nouveau flamenco, gypsy jazz and bluegrass tunes.

Every kind of art imaginable will be at the show, and having the artists there to share what inspired them to create each work allows the patrons to bring home art with a story and a bit of a soul.

In addition, many of the artists donate artworks while there, to the Preston Kuppe Guild, which will later auction them off with proceeds going to the Uncompensated Care Fund for Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Several Queen Anne artists will participate in this show, including Suzanne de la Torre, who creates knitwear, and Laura Syren who uses paper to make lampshades and other things. De la Torre started in fashion when she was in her teens. She made an entire wardrobe of three-piece suits for her mother, the first female professor of economics at California State University-Fullerton.

These artists will join the fun in Hanger 30 at Magnuson Park. There will be artists demonstrating their creative processes throughout the show, which runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.

Northwest Art Alliance is delighted to have won the lottery for the hangar space and excited to keep community fun like this alive.
