Ballard students perform in Edinburgh

The Ballard High School Drama Department, under the direction of Shawn M. Riley, is performing in The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as part of the American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF).

Each August, Edinburgh, Scotland becomes the world’s largest arts festival in the world, with performing artists from all over the world taking part. The Fringe Festival includes more than 1,800 different performances of music, theater, dance and comedy during its three-week run. Ballard High School students are performing three shows of Jason Robert Brown’s “Songs for a New World,” on Aug. 18, 19 and 21.

The award-winning Ballard High School drama program was selected by the AHSTF board of advisors to represent the United States as part of the 2013 AHSTF program. The board reviews all completed applications and recommendations and chooses only 40 high schools in the United States to participate.

The students’ families and the Performing Arts Booster Club funded the cost for the trip. Students, faculty and parents had been fund-raising all year long — from auctions to car washes — to pay as much of the trip as possible.
