The 2011 Ballard Golf Classic event at the Golf Club at Newcastle was a huge success this year, raising more than $130,000 for the foundation and the Ballard High School athletic and music programs.
The two-day event, which includes a dinner and auction Monday night followed by a day of golf on Tuesday. More than 240 golfers took part in the event, which used both courses at the Golf Club at Newcastle. Winners for the event included Mike Nall, Randall Morris, Eric Peterson, Fernando DaSilva and Joe Sullivan, Tony Kazmirski, Brent Husmoe, Steve Oylear.
The title sponsors for the event included Victor Salvino ‘51, Dennis Burns ‘62, and John Goodman ’71. Other sponsors who made the event successful include Tiseo Paving, GM Nameplate, Covich-Williams, Anchor QEA, Swedish Hospital, Stevens Transport, Salmon Bay Sand & Gravel, J & D Machine & Gear, Fran and Spence Lehmann, Peoples Bank, Dick’s Drive-in, Card Kingdom, Brown Bear, Weber Law, Larry and Jody Clovis, Sound Planning Meetings & Events, Bill and Linda MacGeorge, Jim Olson, Viking Bank, Marqueen Garage, Alfa-Tec, Stritmatter, Kessler, Whelen, & Colluccio, DeLaunay Communications, Subway, Carter Subaru, Puetz Golf Super Stores, Chateau Ste Michelle, and Dukes Chowder House.
Funding provided by the Seattle School District for Ballard athletic teams and marching and pep bands primarily covers limited team transportation costs. Each sports team only receives about $500 from the school district to fund all costs of their sport for the season. More than 850 student athletes participate on 35 different teams in 21 sports. In addition, more than 200 students participate in the music programs without any funding from the District.
The Golf Classic made a significant difference to the overall success of Ballard High School, allowing the school staff to build and improve their athletic and music programs so that they continue to be an asset in the Ballard community.
