Ballard Beavers win season opener

Offense shines in 34-27 overtime win against Sammamish

Before the beginning of the football season, Ballard Beavers’ new head coach Joey Thomas said that the team will only go as far as the offensive and defensive line would take them.

So far, the trenches have been pretty good to Ballard High School.

The Beavers beat Sammamish High School, 34-27, in their season opener Friday night that included an overtime thriller of a finish.

Not only did the Beavers’ offensive line protect quarterback John Verduin, allowing only one quarterback sack all game, but the defense held tough during the overtime period and forced a turnover.

Junior Dominic King turned in a monster performance for the Beavers, rushing for 195 yards, including a 52-yard run for a touchdown. He also caught two touchdown passes, and gained 41 yards receiving. King amassed 255 all-purpose yards.

Junior quarterback Verduin threw for 101 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Jesse Scott scored a touchdown on a 35-yard run and senior Jack McLauchlan also found the end zone with a 32-yard touchdown reception in the end zone as the horn sounded to end the first half.

One of the most impressive aspects of the victory was the 34 points scored by the Ballard offense. That point total was more than the Beavers scored in a single game during the last two seasons.
