Ballard Beavers suffer on the hard court, SPU keeps winning

It was a rough week for Ballard Beavers basketball as the men’s varsity team lost two games and the women’s varsity squad split its games against Newport High School and the Roosevelt Roughriders.

With the early season success behind them, Ballard’s varsity men’s basketball team started strong on Jan. 3 against Newport High School, jumping out to an early lead. But the Newport Knights quickly took control of the game midway through the first quarter, and cruised to a 60-47 win over the Beavers.

Ballard suffered a poor night shooting the ball, making on 32 percent of their shots. Junior Seth Berger paced the Beavers with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Junior Stuart MacGeorge poured in 8 points and Nate Rauda contributed 6 points and three steals.

The story was much the same when Ballard played archrival Roosevelt at home on Friday, Jan. 13. The Roughriders took an early lead and held on in a tight contest to win, 41-37.

Junior guard Seth Berger, once again, led the way for the Beavers with 14 points. Seniors Jake Devine and Brad Baker each added 6 points in the loss. The loss dropped the Beavers’ overall record to 7-7 and their conference record to 5-4.

The lady Beavers fared better than the boys squad last week, as Ballard’s young woman’s team fell to the Newport Knights 41-39 in a nail-biter. The Beavers had their chances in the fourth quarter to win the game, but were unable to convert in clutch situations. Ballard’s Cailey Beckett dominated the scoring with 21 points. Sophomore Nancy MacGeorge added 11 points and 13 rebounds.

The Lady Beavers appeared to come into their own Friday night against the Roosevelt Roughriders. The squad handily beat the Roughrider, 65-46.

The win gives the Ballard ladies a 4-10 overall record and a conference record of 3-6. However, the win over the Roughriders keeps the Ballard girls playoff hopes alive.

Sophomore Nancy MacGeorge led the scoring with 12 points, 7 assists and 2 blocked shots. Beverly Verduin added 11 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Coming off her strong performance at Newport, Cailey Beckett contributed 10 points.

Next up for the Beavers, both the boys and girls squads travel to Bothell High School on Friday, Jan. 20. The girls face the Roughriders at Roosevelt on Saturday, Jan. 21. The boys face Inglemoor at home on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
