Allergies be gone!

As we approach the fall and winter months, many of us still suffer from the sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes and fatigue that allergies cause.

Our environment is a never- ending source of possible triggers. Things like molds and some pollen are worse in the fall. During the winter months we live indoors more. This increases exposure to dust mites and animal dander that stimulate allergies.

Allergies are a result of an immune system gone haywire. Our immune system is the part of our body that deals with foreign invaders. It is definitely wise to keep this system working as strongly as possible.

There are many factors that affect the functioning of our immune system. When we are tired or too stressed or sad, our immune system does not function efficiently. Some strategies for dealing with these things are pretty simple. One plan would be to schedule rest. Open your date book and make an appointment with yourself to rest. How about every Sunday from 10 a.m. until noon? Just read a book or cuddle with your animals or write in your journal or listen to music. Do not go out or clean house or make a play date.

Sadness affects all of us sooner or later. Sometimes there is nothing to be done about it but wait for time to pass. However, you can take a 'sadness break' by watching a silly comedy or reading a joke book. These simple acts that make you laugh improve your immune function.

Stress is an ever present part of our daily lives. A good dose of exercise is an important and effective way of dealing with stress. If you feel too tired to do this, try taking a pillow and punching it until you just cannot any more (this may have the side benefit of making you laugh).

Acupuncture is a very effective way of dealing with fatigue, stress and sadness. The treatments are soothing, calming and restorative. There are particular acupuncture points that strengthen the immune system.

Our environment contains many chemicals which depress our immune systems. Some chemicals are contained in things we use on a daily basis.

Commonly used cleaners that contain bleach are poison to our systems. Old fashioned 'bluing' for your clothes or Bon Ami to clean you sinks are better alternatives. The 'green' market has blossomed lately and there are all sorts of other products to clean out there that are non-toxic. .

Foods grown with pesticides and meat that contains hormones can depress the immune system too. If a food product contains something on the label that you cannot pronounce, skipping it is usually the wise course. Some common drinks contain propylene glycol (that is anti-freeze, folks!). This is also toxic. Read the labels before you consume anything. My favorite saying is "You would not put sand in your car and expect it to run, would you?" Fresh food is always the best. It is good to consult with your health care practitioner about these things.

Many cosmetics and personal hygiene products contain poisons too. Use non-bleached feminine hygiene products, a few drops of essential oil under your arm for deodorant and buy cosmetics (lipstick etc.) made by companies that feature natural ingredients.

There are many herbal preparations and supplements that can aid in ridding you of your allergies. One simple tea that helps many people is nettle tea. There are some 'allergy be gone' teas available at health food stores that can be helpful as well.

Because everyone's bodies have their own energetic patterns, it is wise to consult with a health care provider to decide which of these products would be best for you.
