About Dennis Saxman....

Saxman fighting the good fight

To the editor:

I am writing to agree with Dennis Saxman. I have met him and found him to be quite a nice person. I am glad there is someone like him out there.

I certainly think builders are being allowed to ruin the look of a very nice city. All the ugly condos and townhouses are all so alike. See one, you've seen them all. Nothing original.

Last summer I went to visit relatives in Michigan. I saw some very great looking condos and really nice town houses. We took a drive to the area where I was born. There was a long row of public housing estates. They were built of two-stories tall, made of brick, had a basement and had off-street parking. They were built 80 years ago and still look great now.

I would not buy a condo or town house in this city. Within three to five years, the exterior will all be wrapped in plastic so the siding could be replaced at the owner's expense.

Somebody needs to get with the designers. I bet 2 cents none of them live in what they design.

A rave to Dennis. Keep it up.

Capitol Hill

Saxman adding to urban blight

To the editor:

I just want to thank Dennis Saxman for his diligence and efforts in trying to make the Pike/Pine corridor into what he thinks it should be (Capitol Hill Times, Feb. 27).

Lets not mention that the project in the 500 block of East Pine Street is at least a year and a half delayed because of Mr. Saxman, leaving us with a blight of graffiti- covered run down buildings that people are afraid to walk past.

It is too bad that the original plan for the building, a glass and steel retro mid century looking building was axed because of Mr. Saxman and his own ideals of what architecture in our neighborhood really should be.

This building was enthusiastically accepted by the Pike Pine Urban Neighborhood Council. Mr. Saxman has his own interpretation of the Pike/Pine Design Guidelines and gives no regard to anyone else's opinions or ideas, which were voiced.

Soon, hopefully, the buildings will be torn down and we will be left with "Mr. Saxman's vacant lot." So do we applaud Mr. Saxman for his efforts? I leave it up to you.
