A walk in the art

This summer marks only the second time Queen Anne will have an art walk event. And to mark this summer's event, artwork from students at five neighborhood schools will be on display starting tomorrow at businesses throughout the area.Students at Seattle Country Day School, John Hay Elementary, St. Anne's School, Coe Elementary School and McClure Middle School will all have themed art on display at various businesses. Most of the participating businesses are sponsoring a class within one of the schools. The Paragon Restaurant and Bar is exhibiting sunflower-themed art from fourth- graders at John Hay. Twenty-six African-themed Kente Cloth paintings by John Hay third-graders grace the walls of Bouncing Wall, a boutique and art gallery owned by Kim Flanery-Rye.Students at McClure will be doing wood blocks, totem poles, mixed media and masks. Coe students will be doing frescoes, John Hay students will be doing watercolor still lifes and photos, Seattle Country Day kids will show papier mache bird masks and Kandinsky inspired tempura circles, and St. Annes will have full-class projects.Flanery-Rye helped spearhead last year's arts walk and, riding its success, she invited school kids to participate in this year's event as a way to enfranchise them and further community involvement."It's a great way to get the buzz started for the art walk itself and a great opportunity to work with the kids," Flanery-Rye said. "The art teachers have been fantastic, meeting deadlines and helping to make it happen."The student artwork is not for sale, unlike the work that will grace the walls of businesses beginning June 19 and continuing every third Thursday until October 2. The art walk dates will coincide with the neighborhood's farmer's market dates. The market also debuted last year.Flanery-Rye was surprised last year that the neighborhood didn't have an art walk, common among other neighborhoods and cities. So she canvassed neighboring businesses and the Upper Queen Anne Merchants Association. The idea was a winner and businesses jumped on board. In the doorways of every participating business, balloons were hung and maps and biography information on artists were made available. This year, more than 20 businesses have signed on to show kids art and later the professional art.
