Since they shoved off last spring from the Elliott Bay Marina, the Conger family, Dean, Karen, Jaime, Mera and Aeron, have seen landless horizons, the cold coast of Vancouver Island, the warm shores of Mexico and even Disneyland.
Co-captain Karen Conger has been keeping a weblog of all of their adventures and misadventures, too.
"We saw almost no one, met up with only one other cruising family, and were frequently unable to get off the boat for even a walk," Conger wrote of the first leg at Vancouver Island. "Since children, like dogs, need to be walked daily, it was tough on everyone."
But the cold, often foggy weather gave them confidence as they guided their catamaran Don Quixote down the coast making stops in San Francisco, Los Angeles, where the gang enjoyed a day at Disneyland, San Diego, and eventually, Mexico. Along the way they were welcomed by sealife of all types: otters, whales and dolphins.
The family met many other cruisers en route to Cabo San Lucas around the tip of Baja California. They spent the final warm weeks of 2008 in La Paz and Zihuatanejo where they whiled away the time. They've traveled 3,400 miles.[[In-content Ad]]
