I am writing this letter in loving thanks to the late King County Prosecutor, Norm Maleng, not from a political or professional point of view, but as a dear friend whom I will always greatly admire.
When my beloved husband Bob was at Swedish Hospital, Norm was there and took me outside to tell me that Bob was not going to live. We walked past his car, which had received a ticket; I said, "Oh, Norm!" and he said, "They are doing their job, Janet."
When my youngest son David died, Norm drove down to be there for the memorial service.
In March of this year, I fell off a chair and broke my leg. Norm visited me four times at Columbia Lutheran Home, where I was receiving great therapy and care. He talked to me about what changes I would need to make if I could not return to my safe harbor - my home. I listened to Norm and was able to open up to him, even though I am a very private person.
David Martin, a dear family friend and a lawyer in Norm's office, invited me to the awards dinner for the Eastside Domestic Violence Program on Saturday, May 19. Always gracious and modest, Norm came over to the King County table and I had my last hug and kiss from this dear, handsome friend who has always been there for my surviving children and their mother.
His ministry on earth will always remain in my heart, showing his loving compassion for his fellow man, with his giant heart.
He was not my King County Prosecutor, he was my beloved friend.
Norm had given each of us a parting gift to treasure, that would become all the more special each time we pass it on to others.
