34th Street Garage: Leaks lead to nicer roof

Gene Mayer, owner of 34th Street Garage in Magnolia Village, used to have a flat roof that turned into a lake during heavy rains and melting snow. Sometimes, the lake leaked into the waiting room, where Mayer positioned a bucket.

A new, pitched roof has given his 23-year-old business a facelift.

The work took about 18 months. Mayer said some people were confused about what was going on. He even got a phone call from a Magnolia resident who reported someone told him a new restaurant was moving into the space.

“Nah, I don’t think so,” Mayer informed him.

The site, at 2410 34th Ave. W., is owned by a trust, Meyer said, noting that he told the owners the building has been the same since 1958 and that “the community would appreciate something a little more modern.”

Over the decades, Mayer has watched Magnolia evolve as younger families have moved in. Those demographics, he said, are reflected in the radio station of choice that pops up in the cars they service.

“It’s NPR,” he said.[[In-content Ad]]
