The Seattle Police Department has released video of a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred at an apartment in Lower Queen Anne on Wednesday, May 8.

Ryan M. Smith, 31, has been identified by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office as the man killed by West Precinct police officers in the 600 block of Third Avenue West just around 7:20 p.m. on May 8.

Police were responding to a 911 report from a woman hiding from her boyfriend in a bathroom, according to an SPD Blotter post. She told 911 operators that he’d armed himself with a knife and was attempting to assault her, according to SPD.

Officer bodyworn video release on May 9 shows officers kicking in an apartment door to find Smith standing in a doorway. The video was edited to highlight a knife in his hand, which he raises to chest level as he slowly approaches officers. Following commands from officers and Smith’s noncompliance, multiple shots are fired and Smith is seen collapsing to the floor. Responding Seattle Fire medics declared him dead on the scene.

Seattle Police Force Investigation Team detectives and the King County Sheriff’s Office are conducting separate investigations in accordance with Initiative 940. Representatives from the Office of Police Accountability and the Inspector General were also called to the scene, according to SPD.
