| The 'Other Guys' is a smart spoof on tough-guy cops |
Terry (Mark Wahlberg The Departed, Max Payne) and Allen (Will Ferrell Stranger Than Fiction, Old School) both work for the New York police department. They are partners. They have little else in common. They are The Other Guys. In a highly competitive work environment Allen is the calm nerdy police officer content to sit behind his desk happily crunching numbers and staying out of danger while Terry is his high-strung, hyper-masculine, wannabe-icon partner. | 'Yankee Tavern' serves up an
incomplete repast |
ACT's production of Steven Dietz's "Yankee Tavern" places a cast of four terrific actors on a super set with great production values where they deliver some pretty funny, even occasionally insightful lines. Dietz himself directed. Why then did I leave the theater feeling as if I'd sat down to a meal of lovely hors d'oeuvres and starters, only to be asked to leave halfway through the main course? | Sorcerer fights without substance |
There are plenty of sorcerer duels in director John Turltetaub's new film "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." In a bathroom, in Chinatown, in a park. Besides sorcerer duels, nothing much else happens. And frankly they get pretty boring and repetitive. Mainly because they consist of one person throwing some sort of energy bolt at someone else and vice versa, until someone runs away. | 'Cider House Rules' revival apropos |
Revivals are rife in theater recently, often with no rhyme or reason beyond their money- making potential. An exception is Book-It Repertory Theatre's revival of "The Cider House Rules." Peter Parnell's adaptation of the John Irving novel was a groundbreaker for the theater as its first dramatization of a full-length novel and for the national critical acclaim the play garnered for Book-It from the initial 1997 production at the Seattle Rep. More praise came from a run at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. What more appropriate celebration of Book-It's 20th anniversary season than a production of the play that put them on the national theater map. Wednesday, June 16, 2010
